High-gradient Normal-conducting Rf Structures for Muon Cooling Channels

چکیده
We present a status report on the research and development of high-gradient normal-conducting RF structures for the ionization cooling of muons in a neutrino factory or muon collider. High-gradient RF structures are required in regions enclosed in strong focussing solenoidal magnets, precluding the application of superconducting RF technology [1]. We propose using linear accelerating structures, with individual cells electromagnetically isolated, to achieve the required gradients of over 15 MV/m at 201 MHz and 30 MV/m at 805 MHz. Each cell will be powered independently, and cell length and drive phase adjusted to optimise shunt impedance of the assembled structure. This efficient design allows for relatively small field enhancement on the structure walls, and an accelerating field approximately 1.7 times greater than the peak surface field. The electromagnetic boundary of each cell may be provided by a thin Be sheet, or an assembly of thin-walled metal tubes. Use of thin, low-Z materials will allow passage of the muon beams without significant deterioration in beam quality due to scattering. R&D in design and analysis of robust structures that will operate under large electric and magnetic fields and RF current heating are discussed, including the experimental program based in a high-power test laboratory developed for this purpose.

RF R&D for Muon Ionization Cooling Channels
Large emittance muon beam must be reduced or cooled both longitudinally and transversely before it can be accelerated in an accelerator complex for a neutrino factory or a muon collider. In practice, ionization cooling is considered to be one of the most promising transverse cooling schemes for muon beams. When traversing an ionization cooling channel, which consists of absorbers and low freque...

We present a 201-MHz RF cavity design for muon cooling channels with non-stressed and pre-curved Be foils to terminate the beam apertures. The Be foils are necessary to improve the cavity shunt impedance with large beam apertures needed for accommodating large transverse size muon beams. Be is a low-Z material with good electrical and thermal properties. It presents an almost transparent window...
متن کاملDesign for a Muon Front End with Magnetically Shielded RF Cavities
In the baseline Neutrino Factory muon front end, strong, closely spaced solenoid magnets are used to contain the high emittance muon beam. In addition, significant acceleration is required for bunching, phase rotation and cooling, requiring RF cavities operating near to their maximum achievable gradient. There are experimental indications that RF cavities may not be able to achieve these large ...
متن کاملRf Cavities for the Muon and Neutrino Factory
A multi-laboratory collaboration is studying the feasibility of building a muon collider, the first phase of which maybe a neutrino factory. The phase space occupied by the muons is very large and needs to be cooled several orders of magnitude for either machine, 100,000 to 1 million for the collider and ten to 100 for the factory. Ionization cooling is the baseline method for muon cooling. Thi...
